5 Benefits of Moving to an Assisted Living Community

Maintaining independence is important for people as they age. In fact, losing said independence is one of the biggest fears most seniors have. A majority want to remain in their houses and that is completely understandable. In reality 1 in 5 adults age 85 and older say they either need or currently receive help with activities of daily living (ADLs). Is there a way to get that kind of help and still be as independent as possible? Yes absolutely– it’s called Assisted Living.

Here are 5 Benefits of Moving to an Assisted Living Community that may help make the discussion easier when the time comes. We know our loved ones better than others so making the choice to move to Assisted Living can in and of itself be challenging. There are many benefits, and it is often the right choice and the peace of mind you’ll both have is the greatest benefit.

  1. Safety

Older adults living alone are subject to falls, medication mishaps, and become targets for burglary. Assisted Living Communities provide secure comfortable environments for your loved ones. Offering secure entrances, alert systems, & direct staff day and night to allow freedom as well as security.

2. Socialization

Many worry about losing touch with old friends when moving to Assisted Living. While it can be daunting to be in a new place there are many activities and services to enjoy while making new friends. Your loved ones can build new lasting relationships with staff, residents, & volunteers every day!

3. Dining

Mealtimes can be another opportunity for socialization as well and it encourages mobility and independence.  Balanced nutritious meals are provided in a social atmosphere to aid in staving off feelings of isolation and loneliness. If your loved one still enjoys cooking most communities offer rooms with kitchens as well!

 4. Transportation

Driving often becomes a financial or safety concern as our loved ones get older and the topic can be challenging to discuss. Assisted Living services are designed to safely transport your loved one everywhere from local shopping to community events, to medical appointments, all with door-to-door service.

 5. Peace Of Mind

Maintaining a home can become quite a task as we grow older and become an unwanted chore. Regular home maintenance as well as maintaining the outside of the home can often be time consuming and difficult.  Assisted Living lifts that burden and gives your loved one a smaller space to maintain and take pride in.

Knowing that your loved one is safe, happy, and healthy allows you both to get back to enjoying life. With high-quality support, services, and amenities as your loved one’s personal care needs change — mind, body, and spirit. Assisted Living Communities can be there to support while still allowing them to maintain independence. With everyday necessities available right here on the Wesley Manor grounds, trips to the beauty salon and worship services in the chapel become a stress-free outing.

Here at Wesley Manor, we have all the amenities and benefits I’ve talked about and more. The best part is you can try it out with a Respite stay! You can try out our Assisted Living for a minimum of 7-day stay, if space is available. We ask that you notify us at least two weeks in advance so we can adequately prepare for your stay. Once your respite stay is complete, you then have the first option to stay long-term or return home.

When thinking about assisted living as an option, remember that it’s not about giving up their independence or the good things in their life. It’s about getting the right kind of assistance– which goes a long way toward maintaining a higher quality of life.

Memory care is a form of residential long-term care that provides intensive, specialized care for people with memory issues. Memory care is designed to provide a safe, structured environment with set routines to lower stress for people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Employees help residents with personal care tasks, just like the staff at an assisted living facility, but they are also specially trained to deal with the unique concerns that often arise as a result of dementia or Alzheimer’s. They check in with residents more frequently and provide extra support to help them navigate their day.

As our loved ones age, it can be challenging to ensure they receive the care they need to live a happy and fulfilling life. For those struggling with memory loss or cognitive decline, the process of moving into a memory care community can be especially daunting. However, this transition doesn’t have to be a difficult one. With the right preparation, support, and understanding, moving into memory care can be a positive step towards providing your loved one with the care they need to thrive.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you embark on this journey:

1. Start planning early: Don’t wait until the last minute to start thinking about moving into memory care. Begin by researching different communities and their offerings and think about what’s most important for your loved one. This can help you make a more informed decision about where to move.

2. Consider your loved one’s needs: As you research memory care communities, be sure to take into account your loved one’s specific needs and preferences. For example, do they prefer a certain type of cuisine, or do they require specific medical or therapeutic services? Consider these factors when choosing a community.

3. Talk to your loved one: It’s important to involve your loved one in the decision-making process. Let them know why you’re considering moving into memory care and what your concerns are. This can help them feel more comfortable during the transition.

4. Make the transition gradual: Moving into a new home can be overwhelming, so it’s important to make the transition as smooth as possible. Consider spending time with your loved one at the memory care community before the move.

5. Seek support: Moving into memory care is a big change for everyone involved. Talking to others who have gone through similar experiences can be especially helpful.
